I am Drashti Pandya, I moved to the United States around 6 Years ago from India. My biggest inspiration to be a designer is my culture and heritage, there are still many different traditions and cultural aspects of India that people in the West do not know about. Therefore, I want to design and create work that breaks the stereotypes about India as well as encouraging the lost art of handwork and hand embroidery.

This is my collection modernizing Indian Bridal inspired by historic garments worn by both men and women during the Mughals, Portuguese, and Britishers colonization period who influenced Indian fashion, textiles, and jewelry. My concept is about Indian weddings and the symbolism behind each ritual and tradition. These rituals have been written in the ancient Hindu literature over thousands of years ago, as well as during the colonization, which also brings in the patriarchal culture. The rituals of women covering their head or face with a  veil, minimum skin exposed are still relevant in many regions of the country. However, there are many women who are independent and have modernized with the world whilst respecting the tradition and values of their culture. Therefore, my focus is to modernize bridal lehengas (outfit) for the modern independent women of India, breaking the societal norms and stereotypes but still respecting and showcasing the rich Indian culture through traditionally handwoven Indian fabrics and embroidery.
